This is the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S21 FE review, and it really is long-awaited because it’s been almost a whole year since the Samsung Galaxy S21 dropped and took a top spot as one of the best phones you can buy.
It’s been so long in fact that the S22 series launch is rumoured to be just around the corner. We weren’t sure if we’d ever see the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE hit the shelves but here it is.
FE stands for Fan Edition which is basically Samsung’s Lite version of their flagship phone, streamlining its features to bring the price down. Don’t be fooled though, while it might be cheaper than the rest of the Galaxy S21 series, it still sits firmly in the upper-mid-range segment, going up against handsets like the Google Pixel 6 or the Xiaomi 11T Pro.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is almost guaranteed to be one of the best Samsung phones yet, but will it also be one of the best Android phones of 2022? Or is it just too little too late? You’ve come to the right place to find out. Let’s get straight down to it.

So how does the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE differ from the Samsung Galaxy S21?
Firstly you get more screen real-estate on the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. It has a 6.4-inch display as opposed to the 6.2-inch screen on the Samsung Galaxy S21, although both use the same Dynamic AMOLED technology with a Full HD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.
You’ll find that the design is almost identical with a camera notch that wraps around the corner of the handset but the new phone is slightly longer and wider because of the bigger screen. There are also new colours to choose from.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE has a stripped-back rear camera system with a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP wide camera and an 8MP telephoto camera so you can’t expect shots to be quite as detailed as on the S21. It’s not all bad though because the front camera has been boosted from 16MP to 32MP – if you’re someone who takes a lot of selfies you should get clearer, sharper shots with the S21 FE.
While both phones use the same Snapdragon 888 processor, the new FE Edition offers a smaller 6GB RAM option for those who want to save even more money and don’t mind that slowing the phone down. You can buy it with 8GB of RAM as well.
You’ll also find a 4,500mAh battery inside the FE which is up from 4,000mAh on the Samsung Galaxy S21.

Like the phone that came before it, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE looks smart. It comes in four colourways including Olive Green, Graphite, Lavender and White. You don’t get the two-tone design across the casing and camera module, instead, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE uses the ”Glasstic” back across the whole of the device.
Because it’s largely made from plastic, you do get the impression that this phone is more durable than other handsets that use a lot of glass. It feels like it can take a few knocks and bumps, and because the screen is Gorilla Glass Victus even that should survive drops from up to 2 meters. With an IP68 rating, the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is completely waterproof as well so you won’t need to worry about getting it wet.
Measuring 155.7 x 74.5 x 7.9mm and weighing 177g, it’s not quite as compact as the Samsung Galaxy S21 but it’s still comfortable to hold even for those with smaller hands.
Around the frame, you get the usual power button and volume controls on the right-hand side with a USB-C port along the bottom. It comes as no surprise that you don’t get a 3.5mm headphone jack. If you do still use wired headphones, it could be time to upgrade to Bluetooth or you’ll need to buy an adaptor.
To unlock the phone you get the choice of using a pin, pattern or password as well as facial recognition and an in-display fingerprint sensor. Using your thumbprint to unlock the phone is very reliable, it worked time and time again, although I did think it could be placed slightly higher up to suit where your thumb naturally sits on the frame.

The 6.4″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display has a resolution of 2340 x 1080p and a 120Hz refresh rate so it’s bang up-to-date. The screen is only interrupted by the hole-punch style camera in the middle at the top. It looks and feels fantastic to use with bold accurate colours, plenty in the way of brightness and sharp details. Samsung doesn’t disappoint when it comes to their displays and this one is no different. You’ll be able to use it for just about anything whether that’s streaming videos, playing mobile games, reading the news or doing some online shopping.
To protect you from eye strain particularly at night time, there’s the option to switch on the Eye Comfort Shield in the drop-down menu which removes blue light from the screen.
Like the other phones in the Galaxy S21 series, the screen feels very flat to use, gone are the days of the sleek curvature on the edge of Samsung Galaxy phones. Whether you like that or not will very much depend on your own personal preference.

The rear camera system has been simplified in the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, relying on a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP wide camera and an 8MP telephoto lens. Meanwhile, the front camera has a resolution of 32MP which is double that of the selfie snapper on the S21.
Photos taken on the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE come out looking sharp and bright even though you won’t get quite the same level of detail as you do elsewhere. Despite that, the camera manages to create a good balance between light and dark areas so the whole scene is easy to see. Colours look bold and vibrant as well, although they could be oversaturated so sometimes came out looking quite unrealistic.
Selfies are where the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE really thrives – you can choose to set the tone to Natural or Bright. Whichever you choose you’ll get sharp and flattering photos. And when two or more people step into the shot, it’ll automatically switch the front camera to the ultrawide mode which means you can easily fit everyone in.

I svagt ljus lyser nattläget upp bilden tillräckligt bra för att se motivet tydligt, men du förlorar lite på detaljer och livfullhet när du jämför bilderna med de som tagits på andra telefoner. Efterbehandlingen här är verkligen på den svagare sidan av saken.
En annan nackdel med denna telefonkamera är effektiviteten hos den digitala zoomen. Du får upp till 30x zoom här men bilderna ser märkbart mer korniga ut än de gjorde på S21, särskilt när du når 20x zoom och uppåt. 30x zoom är knappast ens värt det eftersom slutresultatet är så förvrängt.
Allt som allt är den här telefonkameran ganska långt borta från det seriöst imponerande systemet på deras topptelefon, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, men då är det här också mycket billigare än så .
För peka-och-skjut-fotografering kommer kamerasystemet att vara mer än bra nog för de flesta även om det inte kommer att blåsa bort någon.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE har samma Snapdragon 888-processor som S21. Det var Snapdragons toppmoderna CPU 2021, men den kommer snart att skjutas ut av Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 som sannolikt kommer att finnas med i många flaggskeppstelefoner i år. Så i mitten av 2022 kan CPU:n som används här verka lite föråldrad men det gör den inte mindre kraftfull.
På andra ställen kan du välja mellan 6 eller 8 GB RAM, beroende på hur mycket du är villig att spendera, och antingen 128 eller 256 GB lagringsutrymme. Det finns ingen microSD-kortplats för att utöka minnet.
Som du kan förvänta dig av dessa specifikationer fungerade telefonen bra. Det kändes snabbt att bläddra igenom menyerna och öppna appar gick omedelbart. Det kommer till och med att klara sig bra med större mobilspel som Call of Duty Mobile eller Fortnite även om du kan förvänta dig att handenheten värms upp lite när du använder dem.

För att mäta prestandan körde jag Geekbench 5 benchmarktest. Samsung Galaxy S21 FE fick 1 095 i single-core och 3 080 i multi-core. Det liknar poängen som uppnåtts av Samsung Galaxy S21, vilket sätter den i linje med OnePlus 9 och till och med gör den mer kraftfull än några andra nya flaggskepp som Google Pixel 6 Pro.
Du får ett större batteri på 4 500 mAh inuti den här telefonen, men det betyder inte nödvändigtvis att den håller längre. När jag testade det stod det klart att du kommer att behöva koppla in den varje dag om du är någon som spenderar mycket tid på sin telefon, men på samma sätt behöver du inte oroa dig för att få slut på juice medan du är ute och går.
Jag laddade ner och körde en video under två timmar och under den tiden sjönk batterinivån med 14% vilket tyder på att det skulle ha varat i cirka 14 timmar totalt. Det är inte riktigt lika bra som de dyraste flaggskeppen men det kommer att vara tillräckligt bra för de flesta.
I kartongen kommer Samsung Galaxy S21 FE inte med en laddare, du får bara en USB-C-kabel. Om du vill få den snabbaste 25W-laddningen måste du köpa laddaren separat. Med det kommer det att ta ungefär en och en halv timme att ladda telefonen från tom till 100 %, vilket är långsammare än resten av S21-serien. Du kan även ladda Samsung Galaxy S21 FE trådlöst om du äger en kompatibel laddare.

Hjärnan i operationen är Samsungs One UI 4.0-gränssnitt som är baserat på Android 12. Det är den första Samsung-telefonen som levereras med Googles senaste mjukvara. Det kommer innan det rullas ut till deras nuvarande enheter senare i år.
Det nya operativsystemet ger dig massor av anpassningsalternativ på din hemskärm, appar och widgets. Till exempel kan du nu välja en ny färgpalett för hela systemet för att matcha din tapet, det kommer till och med att justera appikonerna för att matcha om du vill. Det ser bra ut och går smidigt för det mesta.
När du startar upp Samsung Galaxy S21 FE för första gången kan du välja vilken sökmotor du vill att telefonen ska använda som standard – självklart kommer de flesta att välja Google men det är bra att få välja när du är först ställa in den. När du väl är igång har du redan Googles svit med appar förinstallerade, inklusive Play Butik, samt några extrafunktioner från Microsoft.
Du kommer också att få Samsungs egen appbutik på den här telefonen, men jag kan inte riktigt se varför någon skulle välja att använda det framför Googles alternativ.

Om du gillar idén med Samsung Galaxy S21 men inte är så förtjust i priset, tar Samsung Galaxy S21 FE allt som fansen gillade med deras 2021 flaggskepp och packar det i en mer prisvärd del av utrustning.
Visst, det här är faktiskt inte en billig telefon, den ligger fortfarande i den dyrare delen av marknaden. En större prisskillnad mellan telefonerna skulle ha gjort detta till ett mycket mer övertygande köp, särskilt med tanke på att S22-serien inte är långt ifrån att lanseras. Det kan vara värt att ha i åtanke att när de nya telefonerna väl har kommit kan den här få prissänkning.
Telefonen i sig är väl avrundad och matchar lätt konkurrenterna från OnePlus och Google. Du får en bra mängd kraft, en fantastisk skärm, anständig batteritid och ett högkvalitativt kamerasystem. Det kommer inte att imponera på dig, men det är egentligen inte meningen. Om du redan är ansluten till Samsungs ekosystem är det definitivt värt att överväga.

Om du funderar på att spendera mycket mindre än så här men du är inställd på att ha en Samsung-telefon, bör du ta en titt på Samsung Galaxy A52 5G. Precis som Samsung Galaxy S21 FE har den en hållbar plastkropp, en 120Hz FHD+-skärm och 5G-stöd. Huvudkameran på 64 MP tar också imponerande bilder. Om du gillar att ta bilder när du är ute och rör på dig kommer den här telefonen att vara ett bra val för dig.
Alla som har en budget och anser sig vara en Android-person bör ha OnePlus Nord 2 på sin kortlista. Det är en fantastisk telefon som ser mycket dyrare ut än den faktiskt är. Visserligen kan du inte ladda den trådlöst och den är inte helt vattentät men den har snabb prestanda, ett utmärkt kamerasystem och ett mycket långvarigt batteri. Det är en fantastisk smartphone som inte kommer att kosta dig hela jorden.
